FRACTALS

     What are Fractals?

The word "Fractal" was coined from the Latin word, "fractus" with a rough translation meaning "broken." Benoit Mandelbrot, who started working with fractals in the 1960's, informally defined fractals as, "shapes that are equally complex in their details as in their overall form." In other words, a fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts, each of which is generally a reduced-size copy of the whole. Fractals  often exhibit a self-similarity quite independent of scaling factors.

From a blending of mathematics, science and technology, computer generated images (CGI) of Fractals brings a wide range of infinite possibilities into the world of Abstract Art. The Fractals generated make use of non-linear dynamic system equations that are associated with Chaos Theory. As a science, Chaos theory deals with finding the underlying order of those seeming random events of the universe. In generating Fractals, the Time function within the formulas have been replaced with feedback steps and other variables have been chosen or randomly generated to bring forth wonderfully imaginative worlds of "what if's."

The most notable of Nature's Fractals can often be observed between the interfaces of the elements, lying between the boundaries of land and water, land and sky, cloud and sky, oil and water, etc. Snowflakes, sea shells, coral reef formations, coast lines, trees, ferns, rivers, mountains, and microbes are just a small sampling of the Fractals produced by Nature.  The patterns of fractalization is all around us in our environment and all we need do is to notice the Fractals within the grain of wood, the crystallization within minerals/rocks, the branching patterns of plants, and even the patterns of our own fingerprints. Once again, Art imitates Nature.
